La Salle cut the Baylor lead to two twice in the final nine minutes but was unable to overcome the #17/17 Bears falling at the Ferrell Center, 74-64, before national television audience on Tuesday afternoon as part of the ESPN's 24-Hour College Hoops Marathon. Sophomore Aaric Murray had 17 points and nine rebounds against Baylor's impressive front line, which was led by Quincy Acy's 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior Jerrell Williams added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Explorers, while classmate Ruben Guillandeaux had 11 points.
The hosts, which advanced to the Elite Eight last season, was ripe for the taking as it was playing without All-American LaceDarius Dunn, who was suspended for the game. La Salle forced the Baylor into 22 turnovers, which included 15 Explorer steals, but was unable to control the Bears' front line. Murray had a career-high five steals in the contest.
Acy's 25 points led a trio of big men that combined to score 51 of Baylor's 74 points. Anthony Jones had 14 points, while Perry Jones III added 12 for the Bears.
Murray's layup with 8:13 to play cut it to 51-49 and less than a minute later freshman Sam Mills buried a three-pointer to make it 54-52. But it was as close as the visitors would get as Baylor slowly stretched the lead to double-digits in the final minute.
Baylor (2-0) improved to 35-3 in non-conference home game since 2006-07 with the victory.
La Salle (1-1) returns home for its third game in six days when it takes on Prairie View A&M on Thursday at 7 PM. It is the first match-up in the four game Cancun Challenge.
