Nov. 3, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - On Kids' Day at Tom Gola Arena, the Explorers prevailed over Temple, 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21) in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

"This is such a great group of girls," head coach Dave Stever said. "Their work on the court shows win or lose, but it's nice for them to be part of something bigger today."

Breanna Mazalewski tallied 12 digs during the victory and with 362 on the season, the sophomore moves into eighth place all-time in single season digs at La Salle.  Mazalewski surpassed Autumn Krauss and Missy McCulty who tallied 358 and 357 digs, respectively, during the 1998 season.

Leading the team effort, Kelly Scanlon notched 11 kills and 15 digs on the day for a double-double and Jacquelyn Mitrovich also had 11 kills along with three solo blocks and three block assists.  Lauren Noga and Samantha Tulskie contributed ten winners.

The Explorers came out strong to take the first set 25-20.  The Owls threatened to push the second set into extra points, but a kill from Mitrovich gave La Salle the 25-23 set victory.  The Blue and Gold hit a season-high .261 as a team during the second frame.

Temple used an 11-2 run during the third frame to take a 21-4 lead that the Explorers couldn't overcome, as they dropped the set 21-25.

La Salle took the fourth set off strong blocking, particularly by Alex Kennedy, Mitrovich and Noga.  The Explorers went on a 7-0 run on the serve of Kourtney Clark to take a 21-16 set lead.

The Owls responded with four straight points before a kill by Noga stopped the rally.

A service ace by Mazalewski and two Temple attack errors gave La Salle its final three points to seal the match victory.

Clark notched 44 assists for La Salle, four shy of her career high of 48.

"You have to give credit to the setter," Stever said. "Not to take anything away from the other girls, but she is always out there hustling ten times more than anyone on the team."

Temple's Elyse Burkert led all attackers with 15 kills on the day and Ariel Pierre compiled a match-high 22 digs.

Students from Pennell, Logan, John Wister and John McCloskey elementary schools visited La Salle for the afternoon match and created a lively atmosphere in the gym.  Following the competition, the volleyball team signed autographs and talked with the children.
