LEXINGTON, VA - Senior John Malloy had four hits on the day to move into the sixth spot on the school's all-time career hit list, however La Salle Baseball dropped both ends of its doubleheader at VMI, 5-3 and 14-4, Saturday in non-conference action at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Malloy, who entered the 2010 season with 201 career hits and seventh on the list, had one hit in game one and then registered his first three-hit game of the year in the second to pass John Rickards (2005-08), who had 211 hits in his four-year career. Next up on the list is Mike Fuchs (1998-01) and his 239 base knocks.
In the first game, Malloy sparked a two-run fourth with a leadoff single then scored on a Jon Gyles triple. Marc Schoch plated Gyles with a groundout and La Salle led 2-0.
The Explorers tacked on one run in the fifth when Kevin Jones double with one out, moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.
La Salle starter Cody Weiss allowed just one hit over the first four innings, but then three straight hits, back-to-back doubles and a single, plated two runs in the fifth. He walked the first batter of the sixth and hit the next batter before the Explorers went to the pen.
VMI tied the game in the frame, then won the scheduled seven-inning game with a one-out, two-run walk-off home run to right center by Cory Spangenberg.
The Keydets used the long ball to their advantage in game two, blasting five round trippers and scoring eight of their final nine runs off of them.
La Salle (1-10) put three runs on the board in the first inning of the second game, as Brendan Norton, Jeff Flax, and Malloy hit three straight doubles to lead off the game. Malloy would score, the second of three times he crossed the plate on the day, on a Brian Meagher groundout.
VMI (13-1) plated five in the bottom of the frame, to quickly erase its deficit, but none of those were on home runs. In the second, Tanner Biagini hit a two-run homer and Jordan Ballard hit a solo shot. He later hit a three-run homer in the sixth.
The Explorers had just four hits in game one, two by Gyles, but had 12 in game two, as Flax, Jones, and Dan Klem, each had two.
The two teams will complete their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 PM start.
