Weiss Pitches Explorers To Victory At Saint Peter's, 4-2

March 17, 2010

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Cody Weiss threw a career-high seven innings and struck out a career-high seven batters en route to his second win of 2010 and helped La Salle Baseball to a 4-2 victory over Saint Peter's on Wednesday afternoon at Cochrane Stadium.

Weiss, who had gone five innings in his two previous outings, did not allow a hit until the fourth and allowed just two unearned runs in that frame. In all, he scattered three hits and walked three, while striking out the side in the third and the seventh. His previous high for strikeouts was five versus Coppin State (4/8/09).

La Salle gave Weiss a two-run lead in the second inning as the Explorers sent eight men to the plate. Jon Gyles, who went 2-for-5 in the contest, scored on a Brian Meagher single and Jeff Flax came home to make it 2-0.

Saint Peter's (1-10) used a couple of La Salle errors to put its two runs on the board in the fourth to knot the score. With two out, a costly error allowed both of the Peacocks runs to cross the plate.

Weiss responded by sitting down 10 of the next 12 batters he faced, while La Salle was able to regain its advantage.

In the sixth, Meagher reached base with one out after being hit by a pitch and scored when John Malloy, who also went 2-for-5, hit a two-out double down the right-field line. The Explorers tacked on a Flax unearned run in the eighth.

Pat Christensen then relieved Weiss in the bottom of the frame with the two-run lead and faced just six batters in the final two innings. After a perfect eighth, he allowed a leadoff single in the ninth that was quickly erased with a double play. He picked up his second save of the year after the final out.

La Salle (2-11) will play its home opener on Friday, when the Explorers host Youngstown State at 3 PM, the start of 11-of-12 home games in a 16-day stretch.
