PHILADELPHIA - Brendan Norton went 5-for-7 and Joe Bennie blasted a two-run home run to help La Salle Baseball to a doubleheader split with visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Explorers took game one, 10-6, as Kevin Christy earned the win, but the Hawks took the nightcap, 8-4.
Norton had three hits in the first game and two in the second, while also knocking in three runs and scoring twice on the day.
Bennie helped the Explorers build a lead in the first game as he hit the second-inning blast over the right field fence to put La Salle up 3-0. He added another RBI with a bases loaded walk as part of a five-run fourth which increased their advantage to 9-0.
In the frame, Brian Meagher scored on a Norton single, the second time the pair connected for a run, Marc Schoch plated two with a single, and Eric Kammler also drove in one.
Christy earned his first win of 2010 as he went three innings, did not allow a hit, walked two, and struck out five.
Game two was a mirror of the first game as the Hawks built a seven-run lead after four innings.
La Salle was able to cut into the deficit, with an RBI by Norton and Kammler in the bottom of the fourth and, in the sixth, Tony Negrin and Jim Tarabocchia each drove in a run. However, they would not get closer than four runs.
The Explorers will return to the field this weekend when they host Dayton in their first Atlantic 10 Conference series of the year starting Friday at 3 PM.
