Explorers Drop Pitching Duel At Old Dominion, 1-0

March 5, 2010

Box Score

NORFOLK, VA - In its first series of the 2010 campaign, La Salle's pitchers struggled. However in its second, a three-game set at Old Dominion, which started Friday at Bud Metheny Stadium, the pitching staff did not allow an earned run in nine innings of work, but the Explorers still fell 1-0 to the Monarchs.

Donnie Corsner found the gap in left center with one out in the bottom of the ninth to plate Brent Frazier, who reached via error, to lift ODU to the victory with an RBI double.

Lefthander Kyle Hald (3-0) went the distance and scattered just five hits for the Monarchs to register the complete game shutout. He struck out 11 batters and walked just two.

On the mound for the Explorers, La Salle starter Kevin Fuqua threw four scoreless innings, allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out five. Also striking out five in three scoreless innings was reliever Christian Schulz, who allowed just two hits and no walks. Reliever Pat Christensen, who suffered the loss, struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of work.

ODU (7-4) took advantage of a one-out error in the ninth by registering back-to-back hits for the first time in the contest to score the game-winner. They had seven hits, only two for extra bases, drew five walks, and stranded 12 runners.

La Salle (0-4) managed just five hits - all singles - and none in the same inning and drew two walks, but two of its runners were picked off first. Only once, Jeff Flax in the first inning, did an Explorer reach second base.

This three-game series continues on Saturday with first pitch at 1 PM.
