NORFOLK, VA - Tony Negrin drove in two runs and also scored twice to help La Salle Baseball to an 8-6 win over Old Dominion in non-conference action at Bud Metheny Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Brendan Norton (two runs, one RBI), John Malloy (one run, two RBI), and Brian Meagher (two runs, one RBI) each produced three runs for La Salle, while Jon Gyles and Jeff Flax drove in one run apiece.
Earning his first starting victory on the mound for the Explorers was Cody Weiss, who went five innings, allowed six hits, three runs, two earned, walked three and struck out two.
La Salle used five pitchers in all and walked eight batters; however of the 10 hits allowed only one was for extra bases, a double. Pat Christensen threw the last 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowed one hit and struck out three to earn his first collegiate save.
The Explorers plated their first run when Malloy, who singled and stole second, scored on a Gyles RBI double. Gyles had two doubles Sunday and led La Salle with a three-hit day, his second of the season.
ODU (8-5) responded to tie the game in the bottom of the frame with an unearned run, only to see La Salle take a 2-1 lead in the second as Negrin brought home Meagher with a fielder's choice grounder.
Meagher started a three-run fourth by leading off with a hit-by-pitch. Dan Klem, who was one of four Explorers to register at least two hits, then singled as Meagher raced to third.
Again, Negrin brought Meagher home with a fielder's choice, and with two outs was on third with Norton standing on second. Malloy broke open the game with a two-RBI single to left center, putting La Salle up 5-1.
Meagher put another Explorer run on the board in the fifth, hitting a sacrifice fly to right which plated Gyles, who doubled to lead off the frame.
After the Monarchs cut their deficit in half, 6-3, with two in the bottom of the fifth, La Salle answered with two of its own in the sixth. Negrin singled and scored on Norton's triple. Flax then hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Norton.
Old Dominion would chip away at the lead, scoring one in the seventh and two in the eight, and still had the bases loaded with two out when La Salle called in Christensen from the pen.
He struck out Edgar Hernandez to end the threat, and then allowed a harmless one-out double in the ninth before striking out the final two batters.
La Salle (1-5) will take Monday off before travelling to Buies Creek, North Carolina to take on Campbell in a two-game series, Tuesday and Wednesday, with first pitch for both starting at 6 PM.
