PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Baseball dropped an 11-7 non-conference game to Penn Wednesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium despite John Malloy and Tony Negrin each driving in three runs and Adam Kammler scoring three times.
Malloy added a pair of hits, which included a two-out, two-RBI single in the sixth inning as the Explorers mounted a comeback in the later innings.
Penn (14-14) scored eight runs in the first three frames, which included four in the second on a pair of two-run home runs. The Quakers put two on the board in the first and third as well.
The Explorers responded in the top of the second as Negrin drove in a run with a single and Malloy knocked in his first with a sacrifice fly.
Trailing 8-2, La Salle loaded the bases with one out on three walks and Malloy drove in the both Adam and Eric Kammler to cut its deficit to four.
The Explorers pulled to within two in the seventh, again aided by the free pass. Brendan Norton drew his third walk of the day, Jeff Flax, who had two hits and scored twice, reached on a single and Kammler loaded the bases with a walk.
After the second out of the frame, pinch-hitter Chris Umstead drew another walk to bring home one and Negrin singled home two to make it 9-7.
La Salle (11-19) left 14 men on base in the contest, which included leaving two on in three frames and the bases loaded twice, including in the ninth.
For Malloy, it was his third three-RBI game of the season and with them, drove in his 100th career RBI, while Negrin registered a career high with his three men plated.
Despite not getting a hit for the second straight game, Norton drew three walks for the third time this season and still holds an on-base percentage over .500 at .512 and scored his team-high 32nd run.
The Explorers return to the field this Friday in the first of a three-game set at Hank DeVincent Field against Atlantic 10 Conference opponent Temple starting at 3 PM.
