Box Score

CAMDEN, NJ - La Salle Baseball opened up a crucial three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series with Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Campbell's Field with a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Hawks.

The two teams came into the game separated by one game in the conference standings, as the Explorers were third at 8-4 and the Hawks were tied for fourth with four other teams at 7-5.

Four players had two hits for La Salle and one was John Malloy, which pushed his career total to 251. That pulled him into a tie with Steve O'Donnell (1986-89) for third on the all-time hits list at the school.

He started the game with a single and Brian Meagher followed with the same, but La Salle could do no more damage in the first.

They did put the first run on the board in the second as Chris Umstead led off the frame with a triple and Marc Schoch followed with an RBI single.

Saint Joseph's (13-18, 8-5 A-10) responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and plated three more in the third to take a four-run lead.

Hawk starter Randy Mower would take a 10-1 lead into the ninth, as he was looking to throw his first complete game of the season, allowing just one earned run on 11 hits and struck out two.

La Salle (13-22, 8-5 A-10), however, chased him in the bottom of the ninth, as an error allowed five unearned runs to score. The big blow was a bases-loaded three-RBI triple by Jon Gyles.

Dan Klem, Tony Negrin, and Brendan Norton all had two hits as well, and all three of them scored in the frame, as Negrin and Norton also picked up an RBI in the frame.

Due to the weather forecasted for Sunday, the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 PM.
