CAMDEN, NJ - La Salle Baseball fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 10-5, at Campbell's Field in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
In the first game, the Explorers scored their only run in top of the first inning as John Malloy singled, stole second, moved to third on a grounder and scored on Brendan Norton's RBI single.
La Salle starter Kevin Christy pitched an incredible game, scattering three hits, walking three, and striking out six. In his 6.2 innings on the mound, he allowed just one Hawk to touch third base.
In the seventh, he surrendered a one-out single to Joe Cook, who took second on a wild pitch. With two out, Pat Christensen was called in from the bullpen.
He ended the frame, then allowed just a single in the eighth before Saint Joseph's won the game in the ninth.
Mike Coleman, who had struck out four times in his previous at bats, hit a bases loaded single to score the tying and winning runs to lift the Hawks to victory.
In the second game, La Salle again took an early lead, plating one run in the first - Tony Negrin scored on a Malloy grounder - and two in the second on a Chris Umstead RBI double and a Kevin Jones RBI single.
Saint Joseph's (15-18, 10-5 A-10) took command of the game with six runs in the bottom of the third, then tacked on three in the fifth to take a 10-3 advantage.
Norton would score his second run of the game on another RBI single by Jones in the sixth, and Jon Gyles, who also had a pair of hits, came home on a passed ball in the eighth, but it would not be enough.
La Salle (13-24, 8-7 A-10) is next in action on Tuesday, when the Explorers travel up to State College to face Penn State with a 6:35 PM start. They are back in A-10 action next weekend with a three-game series at Fordham.
