Softball Falls 9-1 to Hawks

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball team fell to rival Saint Joseph's 9-1 in five innings on Sunday. The loss drops the Explorers to 13-26-1, 2-14 in the A-10, while the Hawks improved their playoff resume to 25-14 overall, 9-5 in the league.

The Explorers' lone run came in when Erica Vile reached home plate just in time before the third out was made on a groundout play. Vile reached base earlier in the inning on a single to left field, then advanced to second on an error and third on a passed ball.

The Hawks jumped on the board first with one in the bottom of the first and struck for four to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the second. They tacked on four more in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Darreff led the Hawk offense with two home runs, including a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast to lead off the fourth.

Gina Massaro continued her on-base streak as she has safely reached in 20 consecutive games dating back to the second game of the UMass doubleheader on April 1st, and has reached base in all but two contests this season. She reached today on a double in the fifth inning.

Three Explorer pitchers took to the circle today, with DJ Guinn suffering the loss. Guinn started and pitched the first 1.2 innings, followed by Laura Beth McCreesh for 1.1 and Kristen Paoletti for one. The Hawks' Erin Gallagher earned the win, going four innings before being relieved by Taryn Ashway.

The Explorers finish up the road season on Sunday when they head to Ambler to take on Temple in a noon doubleheader.
