Box Score
BRONX, NY - Jeff Flax hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that gave La Salle Baseball a 4-2 lead in the fourth. However, the Fordham Rams plated seven unearned runs on their way to a 12-5 victory in the Atlantic 10 Conference game to take the series Sunday at Houlihan Park.
Flax led the Explorer attack with a 3-for-4 effort, with two runs scored an RBI double and the two-run homer. Chris Umstead also scored two runs and had two hits, as did Brendan Norton and Jon Gyles.
Trailing 1-0 after one, Norton singled, Umstead walked and Flax hit a ground-rule double to plate Norton. Umstead would score on Marc Schoch's sacrifice fly to center and La Salle led 2-1.
After Fordham tied the game at two in the third, La Salle again plated two in the fourth, this time with a two-out rally. Umstead singled, stole second, then scored on the Flax shot to left field.
Fordham (16-28, 10-8 A-10) took its first lead with a three spot in the bottom of the fourth. Then, after Flax scored on a Tony Negrin grounder in the sixth, tying the score at five, the Rams responded with a six spot in the bottom of the frame to take an 11-5 lead.
The Rams Rich Anastasi threw the final three frames for Fordham and allowed just two singles to pick up his second save of the season, as Joseph Charest (1-2) earned the win out of the pen.
La Salle (15-26, 9-9 A-10) will take the week off before it gets back to action. The Explorers will host their next two A-10 series, first welcoming Saint Louis for a three-game set this weekend starting Friday, then St. Bonaventure next weekend, starting Thursday.
