AMHERST, MA – In its final regular season Atlantic 10 game of the 2010 season, La Salle Baseball dropped a 15-8 decision to Massachusetts Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
Massachusetts opened the scoring in the second inning on Mike Gedman’s three-run home run that just cleared the centerfield fence. They tacked on three more in the third, two on a pair of singles and one thanks to a Garrett Glashoff’s RBI double, to give his team a 6-0 lead.
The Minutemen increased their lead to double figures pushing across four in the fifth frame, two of them unearned, on a pair of RBI singles, another on a Glashoff RBI double, and the last on a sacrifice fly.
La Salle finally broke through in the sixth frame scoring three runs after leaving five men on base, including four in scoring position, in the game’s first four innings.
The inning was started by John Malloy with a single to center, Jon Gyles was hit by a pitch, and Brendan Norton followed with an RBI double to left center, breaking a string of 13 scoreless innings thrown by UMass pitchers.
Jeff Flax drove in another with a bunt single to the right side, which brought home Gyles, and Norton would score his 49th run of the season off the bat of Chris Umstead.
With runners on first and second and nobody out, UMass went to its bullpen, ending Bryan Leigh’s day. He improved to 6-5 after going five-plus innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and striking out five.
His replacement Charlie Benson ended that threat with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to first. He also faced a second-and-third with two out in the top of the seventh, but forced a pop-up to short to end that frame.
Massachusetts (18-27, 12-14 A-10) put the game away with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, which included another three-run home run, this one off the bat of Kyle Multner.
La Salle (21-30, 14-13 A-10) plated five runs in the top of the ninth, which was starting with Malloy collecting his third hit of the day. It also included a two-RBI single from Dan Klem, while Adam Kammler, Kevin Jones, and Marc Schoch each drove in one.
With one more game left in the A-10 schedule, in which Fordham hosts Duquesne at 7 PM, the Explorers will await its postseason fate. Check GoExplorers.com later this evening to see if La Salle advances into next week’s A-10 postseason.
