CAMDEN, NJ - La Salle Baseball ended its trip to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship the same way it started, a 7-2 loss to Rhode Island on Friday morning at Campbell's Field.
Forced to resume play starting at 11 AM on Friday after lightning and rain suspended Thursday's contest (read release), Christian Schulz started the fifth frame, where the game had been haulted, and held the Rams scoreless in the fifth and sixth to keep the score at 4-2.
Tony Negrin led of the bottom of the fifth with a single, but a double play cleared the bases. In the sixth, Jon Gyles, hit-by-pitch, and Brendan Norton, single, each reached base with no outs.
Jeff Flax moved the pair over into scoring position, however Rhode Island's Mike Bradstreet ended the threat with a foul out and fly out.
Rhode Island (31-25) responded with three in the top of the seventh, the key hit was a Zoey Angulo two-out two-RBI single to right to put the Rams on top 7-2.
Negrin, who went 4-for-5 in the game, hit a one-out singled in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded. Then in the eighth, Norton, who went 3-for-3 and finished the season 80-for-200 (a .400 batting average), also singled with one out, but another double play erased him.
La Salle (22-32) even had two men aboard in the ninth, but Dan Johnson closed the game with a grounder to himself, which ended the Explorers season.
