Explorers Drop Tight Game, 3-2, to St. Bonaventure

May 7, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Mary Pat Conville blasted a two-run single to erase an early two-run deficit, but St. Bonaventure pulled out a 3-2 decision at West Campus Field on Friday afternoon. The Explorers are now 13-29-1 (2-17 Atlantic 10) while the Bonnies moved to 12-25 (6-9 Atlantic 10).

The Bonnies took a two-run lead in top of the first on a Brooke Frey home run to left field before the Explorers tied it up in the bottom of the third. Laura Gallagher led off with a single through the right side and two batters later, Gina Massaro reached on a bunt single. Breanna DiTommaso laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Massaro and Gallagher to second and third, respectively, before Conville ripped a shot to right field to score both runners.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as the Bonnies scored the deciding run in the top of the fourth on a double steal. Brittany Storch, pinch running for Maureen Wells, was caught stealing at second but Hali Enderby scored from third base on the play.

Erica Vile blasted a double to right field in the bottom of the fourth, but that was the closest the home squad got down the stretch.

DJ Guinn pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking two. Sherri Thompson pitched for the Bonnies, also going all seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out 11 and walking one.

The Explorers and Bonnies play the second game of their two-game set on Saturday at noon. The Explorers' five seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony at approximately 11:45 AM.
