Explorers Play Lehigh To Scoreless Tie in Double OT

Sept. 10, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Richter sent five shots toward the goal, but excellent goalkeeping on both ends of the field resulted in a 0-0 tie in double overtime at Lehigh on Friday night.

The Explorers outshot the host Mountain Hawks 17-15, with a 10-2 advantage on shots on goal, but Hawk goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell made all 10 saves in the 110-minute contest. Freshman John McCarthy earned the start in goal, making two saves in his first collegiate shutout.

Richter attempted putting the Explorers on the board early as two of his shots on goal came in the first 7:04. He sent one toward the net at 6:36, which was picked up by Nydell, and tried heading one in 28 seconds later which was also stopped.

The remainder of regulation was an even match between the squads. Lehigh attempted to win it at 93:56 when Cameron Omsberg registered one of the Mountain Hawks' two shots on goal, but McCarthy came up with the stop. Glenroy Chapman kicked a shot on goal with 17 seconds remaining in the first OT to try to win it, but Nydell once again stopped the ball.

Ryan Sepe made two shots on goal in the second overtime, but the teams remained scoreless.

In addition to shots and shots on goal, the Explorers also held a 6-2 corner kick advantage and a two-foul (16-14) advantage over the hosts.

The Explorers return to the pitch on Wednesday when they play the third of seven straight road games, this time at UMBC at 7:00 PM.
