MOON TOWNSHIP, PA -
La Salle received goals from three different players and senior goalkeeper Emma Ruth made six saves to lead the Explorers to a 3-1 victory over Appalachian State in a neutral site game at Robert Morris on Sunday. Senior Beth Carey and sophomores Neelam Kumar and Janel Paukovits all recorded goals for the Blue and Gold.
"Again, I am very proud of the way we played today," head coach Michelle Marks said. "We played a great possession game and connected very well. We have started coming into our own and found a way to score. We came out strong in the second half and executed two goals in the first two minutes. It was another great team effort.
"Defensively, we had a strong showing especially from our goalkeeper, Emma Ruth, who made some extremely tough saves to keep our lead," Marks said.
Ruth allowed only one goal for the second consecutive contest and made four saves in the second half.
Carey got the Explorers on the board with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. The score would remain 1-0 through halftime, but after intermission, a flurry of offense from both sides kept the scoreboard changing.
Just 26 seconds after halftime, Kumar received a pass from sophomore Maddie Doub to give La Salle a 2-0 lead. Seventy seconds later, Paukovits found the back of the cage to add some insurance.
A goal in the 40th minute by Lesley Thomas was the only offense Appalachian State could manage.
La Salle (2-3) out-shot the Mountaineers, 17-11, and had a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Bridgette Street made nine saves for ASU (2-3).
The Explorers remain on the road for one more weekend when they take on VCU (Friday) and Longwood (Saturday) in a pair of games on Longwood's campus.
