NEWARK, DE - La Salle Women's Soccer freshmen Renee Washington and Anna Dolhansky each scored a goal for the Explorers to help them to a 2-1 overtime victory over the hosts Delaware, Friday evening in the nightcap of the Blue Hen Classic.
With the victory, La Salle, which is on a nine-game road swing, improved to 3-0-1 in the first four games of the trip and have won three straight versus Delaware.
The Explorers put the first goal on the board as Dolhansky tallied her fourth of the season in the 23rd minute off an assist from Leigh Gray, her third helper of 2010.
However, the Blue Hens (4-3-0) were able to get the equalizer with just 15 ticks left before the half when Andrea Luttio notched her second of the year off an assist from Ali Miller.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the second half, thanks to each teams' goalkeepers. The Explorers' Gabby Pakhtigian and Delaware's Breanna Stemler each made three saves after the break, with Pakhtigian coming up with two in the period's final four minutes. Stemler also made a save late on a Heather Steadman shot in the 89th minute.
In the first overtime, Delaware attempted the first shot one minute in, which went wide. Four minutes later, Washington notched her sixth goal of the season and her third game-winning goal of 2010.
The game marked the third straight overtime contest for the Explorers and that has only ever happened once before in the school's history, which was during the 1999 season.
La Salle (5-2-1) will now face Drexel, a 3-1 loser to George Washington on Friday in the first game of the night, on Sunday at 12 PM in its final game of the Blue Hen Classic.
This is the second straight season the Explorers have been 5-2-1 after eight games, and only the 2000 squad had more victories (6) through eight contests.
