Pitching Sparks DH Sweep Over Longwood

Feb. 26, 2011

Box Score

FARMVILLE, VA – After being rained out on Friday night, the La Salle baseball team made up for lost time on Saturday and swept a doubleheader against Longwood at Bolding Stadium.

“We had great pitching performances today,” said head coach Mike Lake. “We didn’t hit the cover off the ball but we got timely hits when we needed it and our arms did the rest.”

The outstanding day on the rubber for La Salle was spearheaded by game-one starter Kevin Fuqua. The senior spun seven shutout-innings and allowed just one walk and seven hits with three strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season.

“Kevin was fantastic today,” Lake added.

The Explorers (2-2) didn’t break open the scoring in game one until the sixth inning when junior Tony Negrin led off the frame with a single followed by a walk from sophomore lead-off hitter Dan Klem.

Junior Jeff Flax moved the runners along with a sac bunt followed by an RBI single by junior Brendan Norton and a sac fly by sophomore Eric Kammler.

La Salle took a 3-0 lead into the ninth when sophomore closer Pat Christensen slammed the door with a scoreless frame to earn his first save of the 2011 season.

In game two, the bats provided some early offense and as La Salle held a 5-0 edge after three innings.

Junior Marc Schoch knocked home an RBI double in the third to open the scoring. Schoch holds the early club lead with three RBI so far this season.

The Explorers would follow with four unearned runs in the top half of the third to take control of the game. Junior Cody Weiss continued the strong La Salle effort on the mound, earning his first win of the year with six strong innings of work. Weiss allowed one earned run and six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

La Salle will go for the series sweep tomorrow with LHP Eric Van Wyk getting the start on the hill.

“If Eric can pitch a good game and we can get some more timely hitting, I think we can get the sweep,” said Lake.
