MOREHEAD, KY - The La Salle pitching staff struck out a season-high 15 batters and the offense was alive in a 9-6 series-clinching victory over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
"Cody pitched really well today, it's the best I've seen him all season," said head coach Mike Lake. "We gave him some support and hit the ball well especially with men on base. It was a really good team win."
Weiss went six innings and allowed six hits and six runs (three earned) with two walks and 10 strikeouts. The victory clinches the series for La Salle who have now won two straight since snapping a six-game slide.
The Explorers (6-8) took the early lead with a Jon Gyles RBI double in the opening frame. Eric Kammler added another RBI double in the second inning followed two batters later by a Tony Negrin sac fly to plate Kammler and put La Salle back on top 3-2.
In the fourth, four straight hits by Kammler, Joe Bennie, Negrin and Dan Klem sparked a four-run burst that put the Expleores in front for good.
With La Salle on top 9-6 in the seventh, freshman LHP Dominic Sgroi came in relief of Weiss and pitched two scoreless frames and bridge the gap to closer Pat Christensen.
Christensen pitched a scoreless ninth and earned back-to-back saves for the first time this season.
"Any time you can win on getaway day especially when you are gone for over a week, it can be tough," said Lake. "I was very pleased with how our team responded today."
La Salle will open a nine-game home stand on Tuesday against Coppin State. That will be followed by a four-game weekend set that will feature home games against Manhattan, St. Peters (doubleheader) and New York Tech.
