March 30, 2011

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA- In La Salle Softball's home opener, the Universirty of Pennsylvania belted three home runs to hand the Explorers a 6-0 defeat at West Field.

La Salle held Penn to a tight 1-0 cushion up until the fourth inning. Penn's Elysse Gorney scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give the Quakers a one-run lead which held up until the fourth inning before they began to pull away, courtesy of the long ball.

Coming into Wednesday's game, Penn was carrying five players who were hitting .333 or higher this season. Kayla Dahlerbruch, who was batting .364, hit a solo home run off senior DJ Guinn for her first round-tripper of the season. In the fifth, Samantha Erosa sent a pitch into dead center field that just got over the wall and was just out of the reach of junior Breanna DiTommaso.

Guinn allowed five hits in five innings. She struck out six and did not allow any walks, but was charged with three runs.

The Explorers had four of their six hits within the first three innings. In the first and second inning, La Salle had the tying runner 60 feet away as sophomore Liz Reed and junior Shannon Skomorucha were stranded at third base, respectively.

Penn rounded out the rest of its scoring when Justine Payne went yard with a three-run home run off of senior Laura Beth McCreesh in the sixth inning.

The Explorers (2-18, 0-4) will have a couple days off before hosting their first Atlantic 10 doubleheader of the season when they take on the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday beginning at 11 AM.
