BOONE, NC - Despite another hard-fought day of baseball, La Salle dropped a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon against Appalachian State at Beaver Field.
Shane Petrellis pitched eight quality innings in game one of the twin bill, but two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth forced in the game's only runs in a 2-0 defeat.
The complete game is the first of the season for a La Salle starting pitcher.
Petrellis (0-1) gave up only six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in a tough-luck loss.
In game two, La Salle trailed 4-0 heading into the fifth when the bats came alive. An RBI single by Jeff Flax got the Explorers on the board and Brendan Norton continued the rally with a two-run RBI triple to cut the Mountaineers' lead to 4-3.
Dominc Sgroi got the start on the hill for the Explorers and lasted four innings.
Sgroi (0-1) allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) with no walks and five strikeouts. Appalachian State was able to record the final six outs in the seven-inning affair to earn the doubleheader sweep.
The Explorers (4-7) will finalize the eight-game Spring Break road trip this weekend with a three-game set at Morehead State.
