Softball Drops Two In Final Day Of Rebel Games

March 9, 2011

Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Explorers finished the first phase of their weeklong stay in Florida by wrapping up the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday afternoon with an 8-0 loss in six innings to Robert Morris and a 6-2 defeat to the University of South Dakota.

Senior DJ Guinn pitched into the sixth inning against the Coyotes of South Dakota, tossing seven strikeouts in Wednesday's second game. Guinn gave up an early two-run home run in the first inning, but maintained her composure by holding the Coyotes scoreless until the sixth inning.

With the game deadlocked at two, South Dakota got a hold of another of Guinn's pitches for a home run to break the tie and to take a 3-2 lead, which La Salle would never recover from.

La Salle's only runs erased South Dakota's early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when freshman Kati Cooper hit an RBI singled to score classmate Megan Hodgson, who led off the inning with a base hit of her own. Freshman Danielle Cullen connected on a pitch for La Salle's third hit in the inning to bring Cooper in for the tying run.

Against Robert Morris earlier on Wednesday, La Salle's offensive woes from Tuesday lingered around as the team went scoreless for the second straight game.

Senior Ali Shepherd and freshmen Megan Hodgson and Emily Moran were the only Explorers to hit their way on base against the Colonials. Robert Morris's Geena Badolato was solid through all six innings, as she threw a three-hit shutout.

Down 4-0, La Salle was looking to get on the board when it had four base runners over the course of the second inning. Hodgson laid down a bunt single to move junior Shannon Skomorucha to second base, but a ground out later in the inning ended the Explorers' threat.

La Salle (2-8) will have Thursday off before making its way to Tampa, Fla. for the Under Armour Showcase, hosted by the University of South Florida. The Explorers will resume play on Friday at 10 am when it faces Radford before taking on Boston University at 3 pm.
