Box Score
PHILADELPHIA-La Salle and Drexel managed play one end of the intended doubleheader before rain moved in and washed out plans for an ensuing rematch. Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning before Mother Nature intervened, Drexel exploded for three insurance runs to propel itself to a 4-0 victory over the Explorers at West Campus Field on Tuesday.
Senior DJ Guinn had her command early from the circle. Guinn walked Drexel's Rachel Campbell to lead off the game, but went on to retire the next 10 batters before allowing a solo home run to junior Paige Collings in the fourth inning.
Entering Tuesday's game with having a hit in seven of her last eight games, sophomore Liz Reed went 2-for-3 against the Dragons. Reed led off the game for the Explorers with a base hit and later slugged a pitch into center field to lead off the fifth inning.
Freshman Jamie Dellinger looked to get La Salle on a rally early on when she laid down a bunt in the first inning to move Reed to second and put the first two hitters on base for the Explorers.
In home games this season, Dellinger is 3-for-7 at the plate in three games with an rbi. Junior Shannon Skomorucha, who knocked a single into right field in the fourth inning, leads the team with a .500 batting average (6-for-12) in games at West Campus Field.
Tuesday was the first time this season that head coach Brianne Brown started all five of her freshman in the same game.
Drexel put itself well ahead in the sixth inning before Mother Nature intervened to end the city rivalry game before the seventh inning.
The Dragons put up three runs in the inning on three hits. With the bases loaded, Kelly Downes singled and reached second base on a fielding error out in left field. The hit tacked on two runs to Drexel's 2-0 lead.
La Salle (2-25, 0-8) remains on campus to continue its homestand. On Friday afternoon, the Temple Owls will travel up Broad St. for the first half of a two-game set. The Explorers and Owls are slated for a 3 PM first pitch at West Campus Field.
NOTE: The Softball Homerun Derby, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast. A rain date has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 4 (contrary to the original rain date of May 6). The fundraiser will still be held at West Campus Field from 3 until 5 PM.
