OLEAN, NY – The La Salle baseball team will have to settle for two victories in Olean as they dropped the series finale against St. Bonaventure 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
The Explorers (20-14, 7-5) could not overcome the frigid conditions on a brisk afternoon in southwestern New York. Temperatures did not get out of the 30’s with winds gusting to over 30 mph.
La Salle scored their only run in the eighth inning on a Marc Schoch sacrifice fly that scored Brendan Norton (Lanesboro, MA/St. Joseph’s Central). Jon Gyles was able to extend his remarkable on-base streak to 33 games after reach on a hit by pitch in the seventh inning.
Starting pitcher Cody Weiss lased five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) off seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Kevin Christy and Pat Christensen helped keep the game in reach with three scoreless frames in relief of Weiss but La Salle’s offense could not compete the comeback.
Despite the loss, La Salle still earned the series victory over St. Bonaventure on Friday by completing a doubleheader sweep.The Explorers have won two straight Atlantic 10 series both on the road after dropping their first to conference series at home earlier this season.
La Salle will return to Philadelphia and will open a four-game home stand next week beginning on Wednesday against Delaware State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Hank DeVincent Field
