PHILADELPHIA, PA – The La Salle baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 edge, but nine unanswered runs by Delaware State sunk the Explorers 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
Jeff Flax gave La Salle an early 1-0- lead with a sac fly in the third inning.
The Explorers (20-15) busted the game open in the fourth with a four-run frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Brendan Norton.
Norton tied a career high with four hits in the game. The outfielder went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored as La Salle jumped out to the early lead.
As a team in 2011, La Salle has had a player record a four-hit game five previous times. Most recently by Dan Klem on Friday in game two of a doubleheader sweep over St. Bonaventure.
The Hornets (18-18) had a strong response of La Salle’s five unanswered runs to start the game. Delaware State scored nine consecutive times to finish the contest and had five different relievers post scoreless outings to secure the win.
La Salle will continue their four-game home stand on Thursday when George Washington visits Hank DeVincent Field for a three-game series.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. with Kevin Fuqua starting on the hill for the Explorers.
Eric Van Wyk and Cody Weiss are scheduled to be on the hill on Friday and Saturday. Van Wyk is the reigning Big 5 Pitcher of the Week.
