Baseball Holds off GW 7-6

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Brendan Norton tallied three hits and Kevin Fuqua pitched seven quality innings as the Explorers fought off a feisty George Washington club for a 7-6 win on Thursday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.

Fuqua lasted seven frames and allowed three earned runs off nine hits without walking a batter. The right-hander struck out four and earned his fourth win of the season.

"Once I settled down I really felt like I was able to get in a groove," said Fuqua. The offense for La Salle had a strong start with three runs in the first two innings.

Zack Feierstein continued his productive season with a two-run single in the first. Feierstein finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

George Smith Jr. added an RBI single in the second and finished the game 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Smith Jr. would add a sac fly in the eighth to help pad the La Salle lead.

The Explorers (21-15, 8-5) carried a 7-3 lead heading in the ninth inning however GW mounted a comeback and had the tying run in scoring position before closer Pat Christensen slammed the door to earn his 10th save of the season.

Christensen is one save away from tying his own single-season record set last season with 11 saves.The righty is eight saves away from the all-time La Salle record of 29 held by Gerard Breslin.

The two teams will continue the series on Friday with the middle game of the three-game set. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field.
