PHILADELPHIA, PA - Jon Gyles hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and propel La Salle to a 5-2 victory over George Washington on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
"It's not the first time he's come up big for us in a late-inning situation," said head coach Mike Lake. "That was a clutch hit."
Gyles had a walk-off single in the 12th inning against Temple on April 16 last season.
The Explorers (22-15, 9-5) also got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Eric Van Wyk, who hurled eight strong innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters. The lefty earned a no decision and allowed only two runs off eight hits without walking a batter.
La Salle took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with RBI's from Joe Bennie and Eric Kammler.
The Colonials (10-29, 3-8) tied the game in the sixth with a pair of RBI doubles from Tyler McCarthy and Owen Beightol, but that was the only offense GW could muster in the game.
Van Wyk gave way to Kevin Christy who pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth victory of the season out of the bullpen.
With rain expected later this evening and into Saturday morning, the series finale has been pushed back to 1:30 p.m. with Cody Weiss getting the start as La Salle goes for the sweep.
