PHILADELPHIA- La Salle Softball had to wait through a fifty minute rain delay to get game one underway with the Bucknell Bison, but in the end the wait was well worth it for the Explorers. La Salle managed to put forth the go-ahead run in a scoreless game in the sixth inning when sophomore Liz Reed's single scored Breanna DiTommaso to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead, and the eventual victory behind senior DJ Guinn's second complete game shutout of the season. Due to the late start to Wednesday's games, the second game was called after the sixth inning because of darkness with the Bison leading 4-1.
Game 1: After throwing eight strikeouts in relief work on Tuesday afternoon against UMBC, Guinn was not affected by the lack of rest. Guinn went the distance, pitching all seven innings in which tossed nine strikeouts, keeping her one shy of tying her career high.
In her last four appearances, Guinn is posing an era of 0.63 with 28 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.
Behind her second complete game shutout of the season and first one since Feb 26 against Lafayette, Guinn got a tremendous defesnive effort from the rest of her team.
In the top of the third inning, freshman Jackie McBride made a sensational dive to have the chance to throw out Megan Horton over at first just in time.
Later in the ballgame, DiTommaso backed into the left field fence to make a catch on Laura Sanford's near home run.
Reed's base hit in the sixth, which inevitably gave La Salle the victory, gave her a multi-hit game for the fourth time this season. In the two games combined Reed went 3-for-5, helping her to reach base in both contests against the Bison. Reed has now reached base in 18 of her last 19 games. In that span, she is hitting .333.
Junior Heather Brabazon also had a productive day at the plate in game one with a 2-for-3 outing.
Sophomore Tristan Musho had a single in each game on Wednesday, putting her on a four-game hitting streak.
Game 2: Bucknell used a three-run second inning to propel itself to victory in the rain-shortend contest. Meredith Dickson's single and Alison Ford's double in the third inning provided all the insurance that the Bison would need.
Senior Kristen Paoletti relieved classmate Laura Beth McCreesh in the fourth inning. Paoletti went on to finish the game without allowing any further damage. In her last two relief appearances, Paoletti has not allowed a run in three innings of work.
La Salle's only run came in the sixth and final inning after back-to-back doubles by Reed and freshman Megan Hodgson.
The Explorers (3-34, 0-12) have now wrapped up non-conference play for the 2011 season.
With six games still remaining on its Atlantic 10 Conference agenda, La Salle will head to the New England region this weekend to take on the University of Rhode Island on Friday and Saturday afternoon, before traveling to Amherst, Mass. for a doubleheader against Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.
Friday's first pitch against Rhode Island is slated for 3 p.m.
