KINGSTON, R.I.- The Explorers batted around in the sixth inning and exploded for six runs in the sixth inning in the opening game of a two-game set with the Rhode Island Rams on Friday afternoon at URI Softball Complex. La Salle crusied to its second win in its last three games with an 8-2 road victory over the Rams.
Sophomore Liz Reed had a bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning with two outs, to put the Explroers up 7-2 after freshman Emily Moran and senior Ali Shepherd forced in two runs earleir in the inning when they were given free passes to first base.
Junior catcher Shannon Skomorucha got the six-run rally started with a leadoff triple before the rest of the Explorer lineup chipped in to expand on a narrow 2-1 lead.
La Salle scored four runs in the sixth inning with two outs.
Senior Ali Shepherd reached base three times out of the leadoff spot in the order for the Explorers on Friday afternoon. Shepherd got La Salle on the board immediately when she smashed a pitch off of Narendrain for a solo home run to lead off the ballgame.
With the game deadlocked at one after Rhode Island's Nicole Massoni returned the favor in the Ram's half of the first inning with a leadoff home run, La Salle regained the lead in the third inning when Shepherd crossed home plate on freshman Megan Hodgson's single into left field.
Senior DJ Guinn was stellar from the circle once again for the Explorers. Guinn completed her eighth game of the season and tossed nine strikeouts for the second straight game, helping her win back-to-back starts for the first time in her La Salle career.
La Salle (4-34, 1-12) will conclude the two-game set with Rhode Island Saturday afternoon beginning at Noon. The game can be followed live on GameTracker by clicking here.
Notes:
The eight runs scored is a season-high for the Explorers and is the most since March 11, 2011 when La Salle put up six runs on Boston University down at the USF Under Armour Showcase.
Reed has now reached base in 19 of her last 20 games after going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Musho is on a five-game hitting streak.
Guinn has fanned away at least eight batters in each of her last three games.
