Baseball Drops Series-Opener at Richmond 5-2

RICHMOND, VA - Kevin Fuqua pitched eight solid innings but Richmond outlasted the La Salle baseball team 5-2 in the opening game of a three-game set on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.

Fuqua went the distance and allowed five runs (four earned) off nine hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work. The righty struck out the side in nine pitches to cap off a very impressive fifth inning, his best frame of the afternoon.

Marc Schoch provided an early spark with a lead off home run in the second to give La Salle a 1-0 edge. The blast ties Schoch for the team lead with three home runs on the season.

The Explorers (23-16, 10-6) scored again in the fourth on a Zack Feierstein sac fly to pull ahead 2-1.

The Spiders (21-18-2, 8-5) scored the game's final four runs to earn a crucial win in the first of three games between the two teams.

The series will resume on Saturday with Eric Van Wyk (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) getting the start on the mound.

Van Wyk is 3-0 this season and has the lowest ERA (2.67) among starters on staff.
