Baseball Drops Rubber Match to URI 18-4

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Jeff Flax extended his remarkable hitting streak to 24 games but the La Salle baseball team dropped the rubber match to URI 18-4 on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.

Flax reached on a bunt single in the fourth inning to extend his hit streak to 24 games, tying former teammate John Malloy who also had a 24-game hit streak back in 2007. Flax added a two-run single in the seventh and finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The Explorers (15-12, 2-4) fell behind early when Rhode Island pushed across two runs in the second inning off La Salle starter Cody Weiss.

Weiss (3-4) lasted only four innings and allowed five runs (five earned) off seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Rams (13-12, 3-3) continued to pile on the runs in the middle frames, scoring multiple times in fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

La Salle got on the board in the fifth after a George Smith RBI single scored Kevin Jones to cut into the URI lead. The RBI for Smith is the second of his young career.

Smith finished 2-for-4 with the RBI and a run scored and Marc Schoch also had a solid day at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI.

La Salle will be back in action at Hank DeVincent Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they take on Villanova in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.

The winner between the Wildcats and Explorers will play the championship game of the annual tournament on Tuesday, April 12 at Citizens Bank Park.
