URI Gets By La Salle With Walk-Off Homer In Extra Innings

April 30, 2011

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I.- La Salle and Rhode Island Rams were deadlocked at one through four innings, but the Rams found a way to steal a victory from the Explorers in walkoff fashion in the eighth inning when Fallon Scorpio homered to hand the Explorers a split in the two-game set with a 2-1 loss.

The Explorers got on the board in the third inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead on junior Shannon Skomorucha's single into center field that scored Danielle Cullen.

Sophomore Liz Reed has now reached base in 20 of her last 21 games after walking in the first inning. Reed finsihed the game 1-for-3 with a bunt single in the third inning, which pushed Cullen into scoring position.

Junior Tristan Musho extended her hitting streak to six consecutive games with a 1-for-3 afternoon, which inlcuded her single in the second inning.

Classmate Heather Brabazon led the way for the Explorers with a 3-for-4 afternoon, helping her claim the second mult-hit game in her last three outings. Senior Ali Shepherd also had a multi-hit game on Saturday afternoon, with a 2-for-5 day out of the leadoff spot.

The Rams knotted the ballgame up at one in the bottom of the fourth when Nicole Massoni took a pitch off senior DJ Guinn over the left field fence for a home run.

Guinn completed her fourth straight start. Against the Rams through 7.0 innings of work, Guinn struck out five URI hitters.

The Explorers (4-35, 1-13) continue their weekend road trip to the New England region on Sunday afternoon when they head up to Amherst, Mass. for a doubleheader with the Massachusetts Minutewomen. La Salle will be wrapping up its road schedule for Atlantic 10 Conference play and the 2011 season.

DJ Guinn will likely be toeing the rubber for the Exporers in what could be a pitching dual when she goes against UMass junior ace Sara Plourde, who is 21-13 with a 1.34 era this season. Recently, Plourde became the third UMass pitcher all-time to reach the 1,000 strikeout milestone.

UMass is 23-17 on the season and 10-5 in conference play, placing them fourth in the league standings.

First pitch between the Explorers and Minutewomen is scheduled for Noon.
