PHILADELPHIA- Senior Ali Shepherd and sophomore Liz Reed extended hitting streaks on
Thursday against the Villanova Wildcats, despite the Explorers enduring a sweep in the two-game set out to the Main Line. The Explorers fell to the Wildcats by counts of 5-2 and 10-4 in the doubleheader on the dirt of the VU Softball Complex.
Villanova jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Explorers put a run on the board in the third inning of game one.
Reed got the Explorers going with a double into right center field, helping her extend a four-game hitting streak to five consecutive games. Junior Heather Brabazon provided both rbis in game one for La Salle. Brabazon scored Reed from second with a base hit up the middle, to shrink Villanova’s lead back down to three runs.
Senior DJ Guinn came in to relieve senior Kristen Paoletti after two innings of work. Guinn pitched the final for innings for the Explorers, allowing only a run the rest of the way. Guinn also relieved senior Laura Beth McCreesh in game two. Again, Guinn minimized the damage and allowed only one run down the stretch.
Still looking to make a comeback, Brabazon knocked in La Salle’s only other run on her second hit of the game when she doubled in the fifth inning to score classmate Breanna DiTommaso, who led off the inning with a two-base hit of her own.
In the second game, the Wildcats exploded for three runs in the first inning, but the Explorers answered in their ensuing at-bat. La Salle put up four runs in the top of the second inning to take a one-run lead.
Sitting out the first game, junior Shannon Skomorucha got the rally started for the Explorers in her first at-bat with a single into right field. McCreesh and freshman Jamie Dellinger also collected hits in the inning, helping La Salle take the lead.
The Wildcats didn’t let La Salle enjoy the advantage long, as they returned the favor by breaking out with a four-run inning of their own in the very next inning.
Villanova kept La Salle off the board for the remainder of the game, while putting up three more runs in the process, giving them the 10-4 edge in the back end of Thursday’s doubleheader.
Reed and Shepherd reached base in the seventh inning of game two to keep their hitting streaks alive. Shepherd sits on a seven-game hitting streak, while Reed has batted her way on base in six consecutive contests.
The Explorers (2-22,0-6) will wrap-up their current road-swing when they head back to the Bronx, NY for an Atlantic 10 Conference two-game set with the Fordham Rams on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
