Basketball Hall Of Fame Inductee Herb Magee Will Be Recognized At Annual Bill Raftery Golf Outing

May 2, 2011

Philadelphia, PA – The RSVP list for the annual Friends of Bill Raftery Golf Outing now reads “+1 . . . H-o-F”. Legendary Philadelphia University basketball coach and member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011, Herb Magee will be recognized for his career achievements and future induction by his friends in the La Salle community at this year’s Friends of Bill Raftery Golf Outing. The event will take place on June 20th at North Hills Country Club with all proceeds benefitting La Salle men’s basketball.

“Herb Magee is a coaches’ coach. His character is one of honesty and integrity. His motives are a love of the game, loyalty and competiveness. He is a great guy, a great tactician and teacher. These traits have made him one of the winningest coaches in all of sports and deserving of his upcoming induction in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the highest honor possible for coaches,” said La Salle head men’s basketball coach Dr. John Giannini.

In its ninth year, the Friends of Bill Raftery Golf Outing has grown to become one of the premier local fund raising events for collegiate sports and traditionally reaches capacity. Magee will be playing in the outing and recognized at the dinner following the event. Entering his 45th year as head coach of Philadelphia University, Magee amassed 922 wins, surpassing the previous record of 902 wins held by Bobby Knight. Magee will be honored at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA on August 11-13 during this year’s enshrinement ceremonies.

“Philadelphia is a unique college basketball city. Competitors are also truly friends. In this spirit, it is our honor and pleasure to recognize Coach Magee this special time,” added Giannini.

CBS/ABC/ESPN college basketball analyst Bill Raftery will be on hand to recognize Magee as well as this honored guest – the esteemed Sid Macleod who has served at La Salle as a professor in the Communication and English Departments at La Salle for over 50 years.

Participants are also invited to bid on the opportunities to play their round with either Raftery and Magee or Macleod. The opening bid for a threesome plus the special guest(s) has been set at $2000 and includes VIP time with the honorees prior to tee-off.
