POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Eric Van Wyk and Kevin Fuqua each threw complete games as the La Salle baseball team split a doubleheader against Marist on Saturday afternoon at McCann Field.
The Explorers (25-18) dropped game one of the twin bill 2-1 despite a brilliant pitching performance from Van Wyk. The lefty lasted eight innings and allowed only four hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and one strikeout. Despite the outstanding performance, Van Wyk was tagged with a tough-luck loss and has now dropped his last two decisions after starting the season 3-0.
Offensively, Brendan Norton had the only RBI for La Salle in game one, driving in Tony Negrin with a double in the eighth inning. Norton went 1-for-4 in the game.
In game two, La Salle cruised to a 4-1 victory as Adam Kammler was the offensive star. The designated hitter went 2-for-3 in the contest with his first career home run, two runs and an RBI.
The home run was the first by a visiting player at McCann Field all season. Norton also contributed in game two, reaching base safely twice with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Jeff Flax and Eric Kammler also had RBI's in the second game for the Explorers. On the mound, Fuqua was the story and threw a dominating seven innings en route to his fifth victory of the season. The righty went the distance and allowed one unearned run off three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
La Salle will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on St. Joseph's at Campbell's Field in Camden. The game against the conference-opponent will not count in the Atlantic 10 standings.
