Sheehan, Weingarten Named To NABC Honors Court

Recent La Salle graduates Matt Sheehan and Steve Weingarten have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, recognizing those collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the 2010-11 season. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. The Explorer duo are two of four Atlantic 10 student-athletes to be recognized.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, an athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows: Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player; Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year; Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution; and Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Institution.

Sheehan joined the team this season as a walk-on and graduated in May with a degree in criminal justice and sociology. He appeared in five games and grabbed three rebounds. Sheehan will pursue a graduate degree and finish his final year of eligibility with the Explorers in 2011-12.

Weingarten was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year this season and graduated with a dual major in history and American studies. He has been a two-time CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team selection and also received Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors this winter.

He was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association and was honored on the I-AAA National Scholar-Athlete team for the second straight season. He was honored with La Salle's Academic Excellence Award, presented to the graduating student-athlete with the highest GPA.
