PHILADELPHIA - La Salle mourns the passing of former men's basketball standout Alonzo Lewis '57, a member of both the La Salle Hall of Athletes and the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame, who died in a car accident on Tuesday evening. Lewis scored 1,137 points in three varsity seasons and was a member of the 1955 Explorer squad that reached the NCAA Championship game.
Lewis, 77, also served as a basketball coach at Chester High School for 11 years, going 237-67 during his tenure, and winning the 1989 and 1994 PIAA Class AAA Championships. He also coached at Cheyney University.
La Salle honored Lewis with a moment of silence before Wednesday's men's basketball game versus Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and daughters, Anastasia and Alison.
