ST. LOUIS - A pair of quick late La Salle goals forced overtime and
Colleen Kempf punched in the game winner in the 77th minute to complete the Explorers' 3-2 comeback overtime win at Saint Louis on Friday afternoon.
The Explorers (7-6, 4-2 Atlantic 10) spotted the Billikens (2-13, 0-6 Atlantic 10) a pair of first-half goals before the offense exploded in the second stanza. Alanah Busby opened scoring in the 30th minute by finishing off a pass in front of the cage in traffic, and Maya Bentley put the Billikens up 2-0 less than four minutes later by hitting in a shot that rebounded off the post.
The Explorer offense clicked after halftime, outshooting the Billikens 16-3 in the second half. Kempf broke through with the Explorers' first goal of the game at the 56:10 mark. She picked up a saved shot on the other end and ran up the right side of the field on a breakaway. She solved Billiken keeper Tori Westhead by slipping the ball in near the post.Â
Devin Muracco nailed the equalizer just 1:33 later, taking the penalty corner insert from
Maddy Tettelbach to knot the score at 2-2.
The Explorers got off three more shots in regulation, but two sailed wide and Westhead recorded another save to force OT.
Both squads took two shots apiece in the overtime period, but it was Kempf who came through with the game winner at 76:04 by getting another goal in the same manner as the first. She picked up the loose ball on a saved shot and ran it back up the right side of the field for the golden goal.
La Salle dominated offensively, thanks to the second half, outshooting Saint Louis 24-11. The Explorers were also awarded 14 penalty corners while limiting the Billikens to just four.
Rachel Hartman picked up the win, needing just three saves to do so. Westhead made 10 saves in the loss.
The Explorers step out of conference on Sunday for a game at Missouri State at noon.
