PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle and Saint Joseph's field hockey teams combined for six goals in the first 17 minutes of play, but it was the Explorers who came out on top with a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon in the Atlantic 10 finale.
Juliana Carfagno and
Emily Vasey recorded three points each on one goal and one assist apiece.
Devin Muracco added a goal and rookie
Kendall Kreider scored a goal to move into a tie for the team points lead.
The Hawks' (8-9, 3-5 A-10) Tori Popinko got the flurry of goals started early, scoring just 1:51 into the contest, but the lead was very short-lived. Vasey passed across the cage to Carfagno, who drained a goal at the 2:09 mark.
Muracco added an unassisted goal at 8:55, picking up a ball that deflected off of a defender and rocketing the ball into the cage to put the Explorers (10-7, 5-3 A-10) up 2-1. Kreider scored just under four minutes later, when she deflected a wide Carfagno shot into the cage to go up 3-1.Â
The flurry of goals was not done, as
Jess Hoffman found Vasey for a goal at 16:09 to give the Explorers a 4-1 lead. SJU's Jackalyn Pauling stopped the rally a minute later, picking up a loose ball off of a Popinko shot and finding the back of the cage at 17:10 for the sixth goal of the game between the two teams.
Despite the early six goals, the defenses settled in and only one more goal was scored throughout the remainder of the game. SJU leading scorer Jordan Martin added a goal at 41:06 for the eventual 4-3 score.
La Salle edged St. Joe's 16-15 in shots, and the teams combined for just five penalty corners as the Hawks were awarded four and the Explorers just one.
Rachel Hartman earned the win in goal, making five saves. The Hawks' Amelia Deibler recorded 10 saves in the loss.
The Explorers wrap up the regular season on Sunday, heading to Lehigh for a 1 pm contest.
