PHILADELPHIA - La Salle men's basketball coach
Dr. John Giannini will be inducted into the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association for his contributions as the head coach at Rowan University, it was announced today. He will be joined by one of his former players and members of his coaching staff, Terrence Stewart, currently the head coach at Immaculata.
The Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 on the campus of the University of the Sciences. The association will also recognize its senior athletes as well as present its Coach of the Year Award and John McAdams Service Award.
Giannini compiled a record of 168-38, a winning percentage of .816 over his seven seasons as head coach of the Profs, earning five trips to the NCAA Tournament. Three times Giannini's teams reached the NCAA Division III National Semi-Finals, 1993, 1995 and 1996.
After third place finishes in 1993 and 1995, the Profs captured the National Championship in 1996 with a 100-93 win over Hope College. Rowan was named the ECAC Team of the Year for 1995-96 and Giannini earned NABC Division III Coach of the Year honors.
In 1992-93, Giannini and his Rowan squad won a school record 29 games with only two losses. The Profs second loss came in the Division III semifinals against Augustana, 83-81. Rowan went on to defeat UMass.-Dartmouth in the third place game, 95-74. Giannini earned NABC Atlantic District Coach of the Year honors.
Giannini's teams at Rowan won 20 or more games in six of his seven seasons and 25 or more games in his final four seasons as head coach. He left Rowan for Division I Maine after the 1995-96 season as the Profs all-time winningest coach with 168 wins – a record that was later broken by current head coach Joe Cassidy. His .816 winning percentage is still the best in program history.
Dr. John Giannini spent eight seasons at Maine before being named the Head Coach at La Salle University in 2004. He was the Big 5 Coach of the Year last season after guiding the Explorers to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Stewart played for Giannini at Rowan from 1992 to 1996 after graduating from Engineering and Science High School in Philadelphia. The Profs reached the NCAA Tournament during all four seasons he was on the team, including three appearances in the national semifinals. Rowan captured the national championship in 1996, and Stewart was named the most valuable player of the tournament. In 1995-96 Stewart was also named to the Columbus Multimedia All-America First Team and All-Atlantic Region First Team as well as the NABC All-Atlantic First Team
Stewart earned All-NJAC honors on three occasions, including first team recognition in both 1995 and 1996. He was selected as the NJAC Player of the Year and ECAC Metro Player of the Year his junior campaign during 1994-95 and was also named to the NABC All-Atlantic District First Team. In 1994-95 Stewart was also named to the Columbus Multimedia All-Atlantic Region First Team and Honorable Mention All-American. He finished his playing career at Rowan as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,628 points. That mark stood until 2008. He also had 553 career rebounds and 237 career assists.
