LOWELL, Mass. - Two second-half goals pushed host UMass Lowell past the La Salle field hockey team 2-0 in the Explorers' tournament finale at the Lowell Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Riverhawks' Bianca Jones drained both goals, the game-winner in the 52nd minute and the insurance goal in the 66th.
The first half was all UMass Lowell as the host team fired off six shots while holding the Explorers to just one before the break. The Explorer offense kicked it up in the second half, getting four shots off but the Riverhawks used their nine opportunities in the second stanza to find the back of the cage twice.
The Riverhawks held a 15-5 shot advantage and 10-3 lead on penalty corners.
Rachel Hartman earned the start in the cage for the second straight game, making seven saves in the effort. Kelsey Federico got the Riverhawk win, making four saves as four of the five Explorer shots were on point.
The Explorers remain on the road, heading to Columbia next Friday (9/5) for a 5 p.m. contest against the Lions.
