Seniors Have Their Day In 2-1 Overtime Win Over Columbia

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle senior class made its "Senior Day" and final appearance on the DeVincent Field turf a memorable one. Senior Emily Vasey scored the game-winning goal two minutes into overtime and three of the four seniors registered points in a 2-1 victory over Columbia on Sunday in the season-finale.

"Our seniors have done a really nice job throughout the season," head coach Michelle Marks Salmi said. "They came out during the last game of their career and really showed what they've been capable of doing. Emily came out and finished what we needed to do to win the game. Jules and Jenica have been rocks for us in the midfield and backfield. Jamie has added some depth from the forward line and attacking center mid."

For Vasey, it was her second career goal and wrapped up one of the best games in her career, according to Salmi. She took a pass from classmate Jenica Miller and her shot reached the upper corner of the cage after being partially deflected by the keeper. It led to a dog-pile of Explorers as the team celebrated the exciting finish.

"That was the best way to end my career at La Salle," Vasey said. "It was unreal and I just want to thank everyone for a great season."

Miller's ninth assist placed her in fourth place on the single season chart at La Salle and tied for the lead in the Atlantic 10.

The goal capped a nice comeback for the Blue and Gold, which trailed 1-0 in the 58th minute when Columbia's Anna Scipioni scored on a penalty stroke. The lead wouldn't last long as junior Abbey Lawrence scored a little over two minutes later after an assist from senior Juliana Carfagno.

Junior Rachel Hartman had another strong game in goal, stopping 10 shots. She finished the season with 105 saves.

Columbia's Kimberly Pianucci made five saves in defeat. The Lions (9-7) held a 20-7 advantage in shots and a 7-6 lead in corners.

La Salle concludes the season with a 9-9 record.

"I couldn't be more proud of the team and the senior class," Salmi said. "They've left the program in a good place."
