Softball Powers Past Rhode Island 10-2, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA- The La Salle softball team takes both ends of the doubleheader against Rhode Island, 10-2, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.

Freshman McKenzie Peace threw a complete game shutout in the second game going 7.0 innings and allowing only four hits with no walks and recording four strikeouts. Junior Mary Cate Scott came in relief in the first game and threw 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits while picking up the win.

Senior Linnette Siedler led the way offensively going 5-7 with three runs scored and two runs batted in on the day. Sophomore Christina Bascara recorded six RBIs on the day including a grand slam in game one to help fuel the Explorers (8-8, 6-2 A-10) offense.

Game one saw La Salle battle back from an early deficit before ultimately putting up ten runs on 11 hits. The Rams got on the board first in the top of the first inning thanks to two hits and an error grabbing an early 1-0 lead.

La Salle battled back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Michelle Hagarty lead off the game with a homerun to right center to notch things up at 1-1. Siedler followed that up with a single up the middle before ultimately scoring on a fielder's choice by senior Alicia Aughton.

Rhode Island came right back and tied things up at 2-2 with a run on two hits in the top of the second inning. The Explorers would answer right back and blow open the game comfortably from there.

The Explorers loaded the bases thanks to a single by sophomore Mackenzie Obert, walk from senior Kristin Travers, and Hagarty getting hit by a pitch. Siedler brought home Obert with a single to left field. Travers was brought home when Bascara walked and Siedler scored thanks to another walk to sophomore Suzanne Swanicke. All said, La Salle scored three runs and took a 5-2 lead after the second.

La Salle struck right back with four more runs in the bottom of the third. Bascara brought home Obert, Travers and Hagarty with her grand slam to center field to open things up to 9-2.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Siedler singled bringing home Obert who had reached with a leadoff walk to give La Salle the final score of 10-2.

Siedler, Obert, and Travers all recorded multiple hits in game one to help propel the Explorers.

Game two was much more of a pitcher's duel than the first half of the doubleheader.

La Salle jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Bascara brought home Travers, who had an infield single to start the inning, with a single to right field. The Explorers doubled their lead the next inning as junior Alli Waddington scored on a RBI single from Obert who singled through the left side of the infield.

That proved to be all the offense the Explorers needed as Peace threw a complete game shutout allowing only four hits while issuing no free passes.

The Explorers will look to complete the sweep of the Rams tomorrow as they close out the series with a noon game at West Campus Field.
