FAIRFAX, Va.- The La Salle softball team (13-15, 9-6 A-10) won the Sunday series finale 10-2 in six innings over George Mason. The win gave the Explorers the weekend series 2-1 over the Patriots and moves them into fourth place one spot ahead of George Mason in the Atlantic 10 standings.
Senior
Alicia Aughton based the Explorers with six RBIs on the afternoon going 3-4 on the afternoon. The Explorers had eight hits and seven walks to fuel the offense.
George Mason jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as they used back to back one-out hits to grab the lead. Aughton limited the damage grabbing to straight outs with runners in scoring position to keep to deficit at one.
The Explorers bounded back with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Sophomore
Mackenzie Obert doubled to left field to score freshman
Valerie Pineiro and sophomore
Suzanne Swanicke who had reached via a single and walk respectively. Junior Erica reis followed that up with a single to score Obert from second and give La Salle a 3-1 lead.
After the Patriots grabbed one back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-2 La Salle continued to add to their lead while not allowing George Mason to score again. Aughton hit a one-out homer to left field scoring Swanicke who had led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. This gave La Salle a 5-2 lead.
In the fourth with the bases loaded Swanicke hit into a fielder's choice to score senior
Kendra Heyer who had led off the inning with a bunt single. Aughton would later single through the right side with the bases loaded and two outs to score junior Allie Waddington and senior Linnette Sieder and make it 8-2.
The Explorers would score their final two runs in the top of the sixth inning to give them the final score line of 10-2. Aughton singled up the middle to bring home Swanicke and sophomore
Christina Bascara who had led the inning off with back-to-back walks.
Junior
Mary Cate Scott (6-4) earned the win throwing 4.2 innings in relief allowing only four hits and a walk.
La Salle returns to action with a midweek out-of-conference game against Rider and a doubleheader with St. Joseph's before closing out their season next weekend by hosting Dayton.
