Highlights and video interviews coming later Sunday...PHILADELPHIA - La Salle blasted a season-best 22 shots and scored on six of those as the offensive came alive in a 6-2 victory over Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at DeVincent Field. Junior
Abbey Lawrence and sophomore
Eileen Dzwill each had two goals to pace the Explorers. Sophomores
Kendall Kreider and
Jess Hoffman also scored a goal while senior
Jenica Miller had a career-high three assists.Â
The six goals and 22 shots are the most by the Explorers since beating the Billikens, 7-2, on October 27, 2013. Miller's three assists are the most since Heather Barretta also had three assists against Saint Louis in 2013.Â
Kreider got the Explorers on the board in the 8th minute when she took a pass from Miller directly off the corner and buried into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season. Four minutes later, Dzwill blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a corner for a 2-0 La Salle lead. Miller and senior
Emily Vasey had the assists.
SLU's Caitlin Gibson scored in the 19th minute to make it 2-1 but just over a minute later Lawrence collected the ball after a blocked shot and scored the first of her two goals.
Saint Louis (0-11, 0-3 A-10) closed the gap to 3-2 right after half-time on a Erica Bondoc tally and the game remained close until 13 minutes left when the Blue and Gold scored three straight goals.
Lawrence gave LU some breathing room in the 58th minute when, after a corner insertion by Miller, she deflected a shot from Kreider into the cage. Hoffman scored off a rebound in the 64th minute and after Kreider was taken down by the SLU keeper in the final two minutes, Dzwill buried the penalty stroke in the top right corner for the game's final goal.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Lawrence didn't need to make a save for the victory. Tori Westhead had six saves for the Billikens.Â
La Salle (3-6, 1-2 A-10) held a 22-4 advantage in shots and a 11-2 lead in corners.
The Explorers take a weekend off from conference play beginning Friday by hosting Fairfield at 4 PM. The game will be video streamed by GoExplorers.tv.
