Volleyball Succumbs to George Washington on the Road, 3-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite an impressive hitting performance from junior Bryanna Davis, the La Salle volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 28-26) decision to George Washington in a road Atlantic 10 match on Friday evening. Davis registered a team-high 15 kills and hit .364 in the contest for the Explorers, while freshmen Jennifer Edwards (11) and Devin Corah (10) also totaled double-figure kills.

After the Colonials jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set, La Salle stormed back with five straight points behind the serve of Edwards, who had two aces during the run. The Explorers led 9-7 before GW came right back with five straight of its own to open up a 12-10 advantage.

The home team upped its cushion to 14-11, but La Salle rallied again with five consecutive points to regain a 16-14 lead. But three quick points from the Colonials gave them a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 25-22 opening-set win.

George Washington took the momentum it gained from the first set into the second, winning seven of the first 10 points in the period on its way to a 25-17 win. The third set, however, saw the Explorers bounce back and lead by a score of 8-4 following a kill from freshman Catherine Edgington.

With the score tied at 10-10 in the third, GW took the lead with a kill before six straight from La Salle opened up a 16-11 lead. Davis had three kills during the spurt, while Corah had another. But the Colonials once again came back to cut the margin to 16-15 with four points in succession.

From there, the set remained tight with neither team able to gain more than a two-point advantage. The Explorers were able to stave off three match points before back-to-back kills from Aaliya Davidson closed out the match.

In addition to the hitters, La Salle freshman Kathryn Wood registered 37 assists over three sets, which set a new personal best for a three-set contest.

The Explorers continue their road swing at George Mason on Saturday, Oct. 29. The match is scheduled to being at 7:00 p.m.
