PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey team scored a pair of first-half goals and earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Georgetown on Senior Day at DeVincent Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Rachel Hartman recorded 10 saves in her final appearance with the Explorers and earned her third shutout of the year, while juniors
Summer Pierson and
Jess Hoffman registered the goals.
La Salle got off to an outstanding start, dominating the run of play for the majority of the first half. After a consecutive penalty corners, Pierson pounced on a rebound in front and scored just 3:59 into the period to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.Â
In the 14th minute, Georgetown had a prime opportunity to tie the contest as a penalty stroke was awarded to Michaela Bruno. Bruno went left with her shot, but Hartman was up to the task and kept the Hoyas off the scoreboard with a diving save.
Less than two minutes later, La Salle doubled its lead when senior
Abbey Lawrence centered a pass in front of goal. Hoffman was able to get a stick on it and tipped it past Rachel Skonecki to put the score at 2-0.
The Explorers had numerous opportunities to pad their lead over the final 20 minutes of the period, but Skonecki was able to keep her team within striking distance with 10 saves in the opening half. La Salle outshot its counterpart over the opening 35 minutes, 14-5, and had an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, Georgetown tried desperately to get back into the contest but the Explorers, led by Hartman, were up to the task. Hartman had three saves over the first five minutes of the stanza and fended off three more attempts down the stretch to secure the shutout win.
A pregame ceremony was held prior to the match to celebrate five seniors who were participating in the final match of their careers: Hartman, Lawrence, and seniors
