LYNCHBURG, Va. - The La Salle softball team split a doubleheader on Friday to open up the Liberty Flames Invitational, beating Norfolk State, 6-2, and falling to the host Flames, 10-2. Senior
Kendra Heyer had two hits and two RBI in the Norfolk State win while junior
Suzanne Swanicke drove in two versus Liberty.
La Salle 6, Norfolk State 2The Explorers rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the second and four runs in the third to take down Norfolk State. Sophomore
McKenzie Peace picked up the win, throwing 4.1 innings and not allowing an earned run. She scattered three hits and struck out one. Senior
Mary Cate Scott tossed the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run.
In the second, freshman
Emma Schweigert singled and senior
Erica Reis walked to open the frame. After a groundout, Heyer followed with a two-run single to tie the score.
A four-run third inning broke the game open. Junior
Christina Bascara worked a leadoff walk and sophomore
Valerie Pineiro doubled. A walk to Swanicke loaded the bases and a Schweigert RBI groundout gave La Salle the 3-2 lead. Reis bunted a run in and
Kristin Martin had an RBI groundout to make it 5-2. The final run of the frame scored when Reis scored on a double-steal attempt.
Liberty 10, La Salle 2The host Flamesfell behind 2-0 but scored 10 runs in the third, fourth and fifth to defeat La Salle. Freshman
Marlo Roadcap suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings.
La Salle (3-8) is back in action on Saturday to play Rhode Island at 12:15 PM and Liberty at 7 PM.
