BALTIMORE, Md. - La Salle junior
Christina Bascara launched a two-out, two-run, walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Explorers to a 6-4 extra-inning victory over Sacred Heart in the UMBC Spring Classic on Saturday. Trailing 6-4 heading into the bottom half of the frame, La Salle rallied for four runs to earn the victory.
Sacred Heart (6-14) broke a tie game with a pair of runs in the eighth. La Salle started the inning with senior
Erica Reis on second base, thanks to the international tie-breaker rule. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a
Mackenzie Obert single. A bunt single by
Angelina Refice gave the Explorers runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by
Michelle Hagarty, put the tying run 60 feet away, Obert was thrown out trying to advance on a wild pitch.
After a pitching change, senior
Kendra Heyer tripled to right-center to score Refice and tie the score at 4-4. Facing an 0-2 count, Bascara blasted her first home run of the season to send the Blue and Gold home winners.
Senior
Mary Cate Scott (4-1) earned the win in relief, throwing four innings, scattering two hits and allowing two earned runs. Freshman
Marlo Roadcap started and also went four innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six.
La Salle improved to 6-10 with the victory.
The final two games of the UMBC Spring Classic were cancelled due to rain. The Explorers will next visit Penn for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
